On July 30, 2025, MSU Health Care Sports Medicine again brought together coaches, athletic trainers, and student volunteers from across Michigan for a hands-on Emergency Action Planning session at Holt High School. The event focused on preparing participants for on-field emergencies with training in CPR, AED response, heat illness treatment, and spinal injury management.
Michael Straus, PA, ATC, underscored the importance of acting quickly in critical situations, saying, “The sooner we can act in the proper way and get patients or people treated properly and to the right facilities for proper care, the better chance we can save people’s lives.”
With a growing shortage of athletic trainers, especially in rural areas, this training is more essential than ever. MSU Health Care Sports Medicine is proud to be part of a program that continues to expand, reaching more schools across Michigan to ensure the safety of athletes as they prepare for the season ahead.
The event also celebrated a significant win for Les Cheneaux Community Schools in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Sara Galarowic, athletic director at LCCS, was awarded an AED, a life-saving device generously provided by the School Emergency Response Coalition in Saranac County. This incredible gift will help protect students, staff, and the community, reinforcing the importance of safety in schools.
A special thank you to WILX’s Rachel Fulton for spending the afternoon with us and highlighting this impactful event. You can watch the full segment here: WILX News Coverage.
Together, we’re building safer schools, stronger communities, and a brighter future for Michigan’s athletes.
