MSU Health Care is honored to celebrate the retirements and remarkable achievements of three distinguished surgeons from the Michigan State University’s Department of Surgery at the College of Human Medicine.
Harvey Bumpers, MD, FACS, Michael K. McLeod, MD, MBA, FACS, FACE, and Paul Schneider, MD, ABS, were recognized on May 1 at The Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center for their dedication, achievement, and impactful careers.
“For the past 15 years, I have had the immense privilege of working alongside these distinguished surgeons,” noted Srinivas Kavuturu, MD, FRCS, FACS, MSU’s College of Human Medicine Interim Chair of Surgery, in his welcoming remarks at the event. “While each possesses a truly unique personality and approach, they have in common a profound passion for the art of surgery, unwavering professionalism, and above all, a deep kindness at heart.”
Harvey Bumpers, MD, FACS, is retiring from his role as Professor and Chief of the MSU Breast Center in the Department of Surgery at MSU’s College of Human Medicine. Dr. Bumpers is a fellowship-trained, board-certified surgical oncologist with a special interest in breast surgery. He has demonstrated continued commitment to clinical excellence, research, education, and community engagement. As a dedicated mentor and academic leader, Dr. Bumpers contributed significantly to medical education through roles such as the College of Human Medicine Research Committee, LCME Self-Study Task Force, and Admissions Committee, along with serving as Faculty Advisor for Spartans Fighting Cancer, and director of the MSU Surgery Interdisciplinary Breast Tumor Board.
Michael K. McLeod, MD, MBA, FACS, FACE, is retiring as Professor and Chief of Endocrine Surgery in the Department of Surgery at MSU’s College of Human Medicine; he also currently serves as the Chief of Staff at UM-Sparrow Hospital. Dr. McLeod is a fellowship-trained, board-certified endocrine surgeon, who is a nationally recognized leader in endocrine surgery and surgical education, having authored numerous publications advancing both fields. Dr. McLeod has served as a Program Director for the MSU general surgery residency, Assistant Dean for Student and Minority Affairs at the University of Michigan Medical School, and as Associate Chairperson of the MSU Department of Surgery. His mentorship, advocacy, and commitment to academic advancement have shaped the careers of countless students and trainees.
Paul Schneider, MD, ABS, is retiring as a Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Surgeon at MSU Health Care Surgery and as an Assistant Professor in MSU’s Department of Surgery. Dr. Schneider is board certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. His career has been marked by compassionate service and global engagement, including international medical missions such as Doctors Without Borders in Bangladesh, the Central African Republic, Sri Lanka, India, Liberia, and Colombia. Dr. Schneider’s clinical focus included improving outcomes for trauma patients through enhanced ICU and hospital efficiency and advancing treatments for traumatic brain injury. He also dedicated nearly eight years as one of the few general surgeons serving Michigan’s Thumb region, at a hospital in Pigeon, Michigan, demonstrating his commitment to reaching underserved communities.
