Dr. Mark A. Smith brings clinical leadership focus to MSU Health Care

When Dr. Mark A. Smith stepped into the role of chief medical officer at MSU Health Care in February 2026, he viewed it as a challenge he felt uniquely prepared to take on. 

The Michigan native brings more than 25 years of experience in emergency medicine and health system leadership, including navigating complex health systems, guiding change and building alignment across organizations.  

Before joining MSU Health Care, Smith served as senior vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer at Henry Ford Health Jackson, as well as CEO of Allegiance Medical Group. A board-certified emergency medicine physician; he spent years in patient care before moving into executive leadership. He also serves as a clinical assistant professor at Michigan State University. 

What drew him to MSU Health Care was both familiar and full of potential. 

“I saw an organization on the precipice of something grand,” Smith said. “There’s incredible strength in the research and academic mission, and a real opportunity to build a clinical arm that’s bigger, better and more relevant.” 

Focusing on a solid foundation 

Smith’s priority is developing a stable and financially sound organization, work that involves making clear decisions about where to grow and where to step back.  

“We want to enhance what’s working well and be honest about what’s not,” he said. “That allows us to rebuild in a way that’s stronger and more intentional.” 

A key part of Smith’s vision is reshaping how the clinical side of MSU Health Care functions within the broader mission. The goal is to better align clinical care with education and research. 

“The clinical engine needs to run and support the research and academic mission,” he said. “We have an opportunity to rethink how that works and build something that truly supports all parts of the organization.” 

Leading the way forward 

Smith describes his style as leading by example, speaking the truth, building trust and being unafraid of uncomfortable conversations. He believes in setting clear expectations, trusting leaders to own their areas, and holding them accountable. 

“Good decisions come from listening, understanding the data and being willing to have open dialogue,” he said. “My role is to make sure people have the tools they need and are accountable for delivering results.” 

In the coming years, Smith sees success as both measurable and meaningful. 

Closing financial gaps is a first step, along with identifying the right clinical services to grow. He’s also focused on strengthening partnerships and advancing a more unified approach to care.  

“This isn’t about competition,” Smith said. “It’s about taking care of the communities we serve and working together to do that as effectively as possible.”  

Beyond the role 

Outside of work, Smith enjoys spending time with family and recharging at home. A self-described “tech computer geek,” he also likes building networks and computers and exploring emerging tools like artificial intelligence. 

It’s a balance that mirrors how he approaches the role, being grounded in helping people with a steady focus on what comes next.
