Health care professionals and community organizations gathered in Lansing on Wednesday morning to launch Michigan for Vaccines, a coalition focused on immunization education and advocacy.
The coalition will seek to “advance policies that support healthy communities” by supporting and strengthening vaccine policies, according to a news release shared with 6 News.
The event was held at the Michigan Health and Hospital Association Capitol Advocacy Center at 10:00 a.m.
Speakers discussed vaccination rates and highlighted the importance of protecting access to vaccines.
Michigan Council for Maternal and Child Health Executive Director Amy Zaagman said that cases of vaccine-preventable diseases have been on the rise and that vaccination rates are falling, putting “every Michigan family at risk.”
“Michigan families are right to be alarmed and they’re paying attention,” she said.
“We do not want to go back in time when it comes to vaccine-preventable diseases,” Franny Strong Foundation President Veronica Valentine McNally said while reiterating a sentiment made in an ad campaign conducted by I Vaccinate, which focuses on promoting vaccine education.
“The science hasn’t changed. Vaccines are safe, effective, and the best way to protect yourself and your community against serious vaccine-preventable diseases,” said Dr. Lauren Azevedo, a pediatrician at MSU Health Care Pediatrics.
