Mark A. Smith, MD, FACEP

Mark A. Smith, MD, is the Chief Medical Officer for MSU Health Care. Dr. Smith not only leads the medical staff and directs its operation, he also is responsible for clinical practice across MSU Health Care. He has developed a culture of excellence, ensuring people have the tools they need to succeed and are accountable for delivering results. 

Before joining MSU Health Care, Dr. Smith served as the Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer at Henry Ford Jackson Hospital, as well as CEO of Allegiance Medical Group. A board-certified emergency medicine physician, he spent years in patient care before moving into executive leadership. He also serves as a clinical assistant professor at Michigan State University.  

He is an expert at navigating complex health systems, guiding change and building alignment across organizations.  He is reshaping how the clinical component of MSU Health Care functions within its broader mission, aligning it with the education and research elements of MSU itself. 

Leading by example, speaking the truth, building trust and being unafraid of uncomfortable conversations are how Dr. Smith thinks great teams are built. He believes good decisions come from listening, understanding the data and being willing to have open dialogue. 

Dr. Smith is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. He is a member of the American College of Physician Executives, the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, the Michigan College of Emergency Physicians, the Jackson County Medical Society, the Michigan State Medical Society and the American Medical Association. 

He currently is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Mosaic Clinically Integrated Network. Formerly, he served on the Jackson Chamber of Commerce and the Grass Lake Surgery Center Board, as the Physician Member for Henry Ford Allegiance Health.  

Dr. Smith received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine and his Bachelor of Science degree in biomedical science from Grand Valley State University.
