  Per the Society of Vascular Surgery, your body contains an amazing, intricate system of arteries and veins. Arteries bring oxygen-rich blood from the heart to every inch of the body; veins return the blood back to the heart and lungs for more oxygen.

  Most people know that heart disease can occur when blood vessels become clogged with plaque and cholesterol, but many are unaware that the same problem, often called hardening of the arteries (or atherosclerosis), can occur in any artery of the body.

  Venous problems occur in the veins, often resulting in leg swelling, deep vein thrombosis (blood clots) and chronic leg problems. Learn more in the below resources.

  Dialysis Access Pre-Procedure Instructions

  Before your scheduled dialysis access maintenance procedure, please follow these instructions carefully:

  MEDICATION

  • Follow your vascular healthcare provider's instructions regarding medication management. Some medications may need to be adjusted or temporarily stopped before the procedure.
  • Make a note of which medications to hold and for how long.
  • Additionally, your vascular healthcare provider may request specific medications to take on the morning of the procedure. 
    
    

  NPO GUIDELINES

  • You may be instructed not to eat or drink anything for a certain period before the procedure. This is known as NPO or fasting. Adhering to these guidelines helps reduce the risk of complications during the procedure, such as aspiration. Your vascular healthcare provider will provide specific instructions regarding when to stop eating and drinking before your procedure. 
    
    

  LAB DRAW: 1 DAY BEFORE DIALYSIS PROCEDURE

  • Please ensure that any required lab work, such as blood tests, is completed as instructed by your vascular healthcare provider. This may involve visiting a laboratory or clinic to have your blood drawn. Timely completion of these tests is essential for your safety and the success of the procedure. 
    
    

  HYGIENE

  • Practice good hygiene by showering or bathing the night before or the morning of the procedure.
  • Cleanse the area around the access site as directed by your healthcare provider.
  • Avoid using lotions, creams, or perfumes on the day of the procedure, as they can interfere with the procedure or cause irritation. 
    
    

  CLOTHING

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment. You may be asked to change into a hospital gown before the procedure.
  • Avoid wearing jewelry, piercings, or metal objects that may need to be removed before the intervention.
    
    

  TRANSPORTATION & ESCORT

  • Arrange for transportation to and from the Heart and Vascular Center’s Outpatient Vascular Lab at the Clinical Center on the day of your procedure. You will not be able to drive yourself home afterward, so ensure that someone accompanies you or arranges transportation on your behalf. 
  • Your escort must stay on-site for the entire procedure and recovery period, or the procedure will have to be rescheduled.
    
    

  ARRIVAL TIME

  • Plan to arrive at the specified time provided by your vascular healthcare provider (pg1). Arriving on time allows for necessary paperwork, preparation, and pre-procedure assessments to be completed before the intervention.

  Dialysis Access Post-Procedure Instructions

  After your dialysis access maintenance procedure, please follow these instructions carefully:

  ACTIVITY LEVEL

  • Avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting/ straining for the next 24-48 hours.
  • Rest as needed and gradually resume normal activities as tolerated.
    
    

  MEDICATIONS

  • Take prescribed medications as directed by your vascular healthcare provider.
  • If you experience any adverse reactions or have concerns about your medications, contact your vascular healthcare provider immediately.
    
    

  DIET

  • Maintain a healthy diet and stay well-hydrated.
  • Follow any dietary restrictions recommended by your vascular healthcare provider, especially regarding salt and fluid intake.
    
    

  WOUND CARE

  • Keep the access site clean and dry for 48 hours.
  • Remove dressing after 48 hours and then you may shower.
  • If you notice any signs of infection such as fever, redness, swelling or discharge or excessive bleeding, contact your vascular healthcare provider immediately.
    
    

  DRIVING RESTRICTIONS

  • Do not drive for at least 24-48 hours after the procedure, or as instructed by your vascular healthcare provider.
  • Arrange for transportation as needed.
    
    

  SMOKING CESSATION

  • If you smoke, consider quitting or reducing your smoking habits. Smoking can impair healing and increase the risk of complications.

  UNDERSTANDING PERIPHERAL ARTERY DISEASE (PAD)

  Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a condition characterized by narrowed arteries in the legs, leading to reduced blood flow to the limbs. If left untreated, PAD can cause pain, numbness, and potentially serious complications. 

  POSSIBLE PROCEDURES INCLUDE:

  • Diagnostic Angiogram: A procedure to visualize the blood vessels in your legs and diagnose any blockages or narrowing. This procedure helps your healthcare provider determine the best course of treatment for your condition. 
  • Angioplasty: A minimally invasive procedure to widen narrowed or blocked arteries using a balloon catheter. This helps improve blood flow to the legs and relieve symptoms such as pain and cramping. 
  • Stenting: Placement of a small metal mesh tube (stent) to keep the artery open after angioplasty. Stents help prevent the artery from narrowing again and maintain improved blood flow. 
  • Atherectomy: Removal of plaque buildup from the artery using specialized catheters. This procedure helps restore blood flow and reduce the risk of further blockages.

  After your lower extremity angiogram procedure, please follow these instructions carefully: 

  ACTIVITY LEVEL

  • Avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting/ straining for the rest of the day.
  • Rest as needed to minimize discomfort and promote healing.

  CIRCULATION

  • Monitor for signs of compromised circulation. Including numbness, tingling, coolness, or pallor/blueish skin color. 
  • If you notice any signs of compromised circulation, contact your vascular healthcare provider immediately.

  WOUND CARE

  • Keep the access site clean and dry for 48 hours.
  • Remove dressing after 48 hours and then you may shower.
  • If you notice any signs of infection such as fever, redness, swelling or discharge, contact your vascular healthcare provider immediately.
  • If you experience excessive bleeding from the procedure site, apply direct pressure to the site, and call 911 immediately.
    
    

  DRIVING RESTRICTIONS

  • Do not drive for at least 24 hours after the procedure, or as instructed by your vascular healthcare provider.
